Steve Bates is a Montreal-based artist, musician, curator, and researcher whose work explores the intersections of electronic music, sound art, improvisation, and experimental composition. Emerging from hardcore and post-punk communities, Bates has spent decades developing a practice that moves between underground music cultures and contemporary artistic inquiry, creating work that balances experimentation with immediacy.
His solo recordings occupy a distinctive space within experimental electronic music. Drawing on processed instrumentation, field recordings, analog and digital technologies, and electroacoustic techniques, Bates creates compositions in which melody often appears partially obscured, surfacing through shifting layers of sound. His work is marked by a close attention to timbre and texture, yet remains grounded in a strong sense of presence rather than just formal experimentation.
Alongside his recording practice, Bates has collaborated extensively with musicians across international improvisational and experimental music communities. He is also the founder and director of The Dim Coast, a platform dedicated to supporting sound art and experimental music through publishing and curatorial work. His activities as an organizer have helped connect artists working across different contexts while contributing to ongoing conversations around listening and
contemporary sonic practice.
Bates' work extends beyond music into installation and research. Across these different settings, he remains interested in how sound shapes experience and how listening influences our understanding of the spaces we inhabit.
He is currently pursuing a research-creation PhD focused on the film soundtrack as a site of critical and creative inquiry, continuing an engagement with sound that runs throughout his artistic work. Whether through recordings, performances, installations, or curatorial initiatives, Bates approaches sound as a medium that can alter the way we encounter a place or attend to the world around us.
